Backup Without Internet

Post by samebod » Thu Mar 03, 2016 7:00 pm

I am excited to try OBH and replace the frightfully unreliable inherent backup system built into Windows HomeServer (WHS), but I am unclear on one critical point.

Is it necessary to have an internet connection to backup from computers inside my LAN to the WHS?

I am concerned that if I am require to send data over the internet only to receive it back on my server, I will exceed my monthly bandwidth allotment.

It also seems that send several gigabytes of data over the internet connection would be incredibly slow.

Thanks and good luck with your launch.

Hi samebod,

Great question. The short answer is ... if the PC you're backing up from (using Archive Manager) and the WHS you're backing up to (using OBH) are both located within the same LAN then the network packets from Archive Manager to OBH will be routed within your LAN. So, you don't have to worry about the network traffic being routed outside of your LAN and back in.

You can test this for yourself by pulling the internet cable from your router (making sure your LAN is still configured with all your devices connected to the router - just not the internet connection) then open an internet browser and enter the url of your WHS ... the web page will still load since the page was served by your WHS through your LAN and your router. You can also try this with Archive Manager and OBH once they are configured on your PC and WHS. I hope I explained myself here :)

A side note ... if you know ahead of time that all of the PC's you want to backup are going to be within your LAN and your WHS has a static IP address within your LAN (which it should since the router needs to locate the WHS for incoming web requests) then you can use the static IP address of the WHS (e.g. instead of a domain name (e.g. when configuring OBH. Using the local LAN IP address will guarantee OBH will not go outside your LAN but restricts all of your PC's using Archive Manager to be within your LAN.
